In 1857, two of the greatest classics of the letters were tried for "immorality": Gustave Flaubert and Charles Baudelaire . Both published their works with the same editor, Michel Lévy, and were accused by the prosecutor, Ernest Pinard. The results of these trials was, however, uneven: while Madame Bovary acquitted by providing for the excellence of their literature, The Flowers of Evil, Baudelaire, were convicted.
